We Get Around

Posted in a little bit rock and roll, hot live action - July 19th, 2006 at 2:47 pm by Mimi

I travel a lot. Thus is the life of an international woman of mystery. Last week I was in Gotham City, and I was drug around by my companions. Mainly, this consisted of eating and working (at my other job), but there was one small highlight of the musical variety. This highlight is called Karate Monkey Death Car.

BUT WAIT.

I know you read that and thought “Excuse me, when did they start listening to emo music and promoting bands like Death Cab For Cutie?” Well, for your information, bucko, Cricket likes Death Cab! [Death Cab sucks. Cricket is fired.--Salomé] [You can't fire me for having bad taste!--Cricket] But more importantly, we are not.

Karate Monkey Death Car consists of the vocal stylings of Jeanine Schaefer with Dan DiGiacomo on guitar. They are… ok, wait.

So, I’m talking to Salomé at the show:

Me: They’re like performance art.
Her: What do you mean “like”?

I wouldn’t call them a joke band, because they don’t dress up in chicken suits. I wouldn’t call them parody because I have no idea what on earth they would be parodying.

They sing a song called “Heather” before which they ask the audience if anyone in it is named Heather, then commence to singing the song (which is about stalking [It is about true love. Heather just doesn’t understand.--Salomé]) straight to the hapless audience member. Did I mention that Jeanine is the singer? Yeah, it’s pretty damned funny.

Their true masterpieces, however, are a song called “People Are Douchebags” and another which is a rejected theme song for the movie Snakes on a Plane. The latter can be downloaded from their MySpace page.

They are about to cut a bunch of tracks in the studio, and when those files are available, we will certainly let you know. In the meantime, if you’re in Gotham City in August, you can catch them at the Pussy Cat Lounge. You’ll enjoy the hell out of yourself and can score yourself 1000 bonus cool points when they’re super famous for having seen them before Jeanine’s tragic Peeps addiction and Dan’s conversion to Scientology.

Our after show experience was much like everything in my life: being lectured by Chinese restaurant owners, ending up at some hip-hop skateboarding party (which seemed like a private party, actually) where me and my friends scoffed at the crowd for listening to West Coast hip-hop, and a horrible thunderstorm in which we all walked around in plastic shoes for about ten miles to the train.

So, last night: Despite having not listened to any KMDC tunes as yet, I somehow found myself (whilst deep asleep) hand in hand with a faceless and sweaty-palmed Them as They experienced their greatest achievement thus far, i.e., the premiere of the video for the MFSnakes song, which sounded much like someone pretending to sing opera over guitar samples and the arrhythmic beat of breaking crockery.

….okay, just went and listened. There’s no opera happening. It’s almost like folk music, but wrong. I am reminded of Ann Magnuson and Bongwater, and those are not bad things to be reminded of.
