Championship bout: Cory Branan & Ben Nichols vs. Mimi & Cricket

Posted in cory branan, lucero, podcast - August 13th, 2007 at 9:35 pm by Cricket

I know you hear an awful lot around these parts about Lucero and Cory Branan, but I swear, they don’t pay us for this. Hell, they’d have to be an awful lot more famous before they could even afford our bar tab. No, we talk endlessly about them because they are made of one hundred percent natural, homegrown awesomeness. What’s more awesome that going to see their shows? Having them come to HCT HQ to record a podcast.

That’s right, my babies, Ben Nichols of Lucero and Cory Branan, together, not only for one of their Brew City Tours, but right here in our living room mocking each other, us and everything else in the world. What we have here in the end is a podcast (to download, right click and ’save as’) that goes from soft and subdued to a little raucous. You’ll want to tune in for the songs and the stories. You’ll enjoy the second listening to suss out the funny bits happening in the background. Besides the banter, we have:

Meantime Blues - Cory Branan
Into Your Eyes - Ben Nichols
Easy (Cory Branan) - Ben Nichols
It Gets the Worst at Night (Lucero) - Cory Branan
Amnesia - Cory Branan
Across the River - Ben Nichols
Little Heartbreaker - Cory Branan
When You Decided to Leave - Ben Nichols

I know we’re up to number 9 on the podcast now, and yet I’m still figuring this thing out. We did well here, though you might want to keep your finger by the volume button for when it gets a bit louder after the initial songs. It wasn’t a technical problem, we all just got a bit rowdier. Hopefully you’ll get rowdy too while listening to it.

    Yayben!

Also, Cory Branan always with the hymen talk! Jee-SUS.

    !!

These are some of the best acoustic recordings of these guys I’ve heard…nice and sharp and clear. Real sweet-sounding. Nichols has a voice that can sound too slurry-gristly on poorer recordings, so you did him justice here. Thank you for having them over and taping it.

    (YAYBEN)

Weston - girl, you so did not listen to the entire thing before you left this comment. How you doing? Do I need to wear armor around my kidneys when I see you in a few weeks?

Sarita - you got a shout-out and all!

I think I’ve heard that 1st song live…not too sure. I probably heard it in the super early stages before he thought to wrote it or something. Who knows?

Yeah, this makes me miss Cory and Ben here in Memphis.

    Jasmine:

You were at the Mercy Lounge gig, you mean? It was a good show, for sure. The opening act was also great, more on them soon.

I have no idea how you haven’t heard of us, but there is a v good chance you’ve seen us and don’t know it. We’re sort of easy to spot.

You know, for a while I was all like “Why haven’t those fools done any podcasts or posts?” Then I realized I had my feed set up wrong. HA HA. I wasn’t even drunk when I did that. MAN.

    Keep bringing the awesome, ladies.

    Hi,

Thanks so much for posting this, it is really interesting, particularly when they cover each others songs. A suggestion for next time; girls don’t talk so much! Seriously, let Ben & Corey talk, ask more questions of them. Way too much irrelevant personal info that wastes time, we don’t want to hear about your one friend in Seattle, we want to hear the artist. Even they sound bored by it…
Thanks though, this was cool (& so was the other Corey B. one).

    Weston - We love you.

Cookie - I think you need a drink.

Dave - If you want a blog and podcast with less personality, I suggest you start your own.

Miss Maggie - We can’t wait to see you again.

haha, Dave you narc. That’s why we LOVE Cricket and Mimi! We come for the PERSONALITIES and the RELAXED interviews! Come on, now. Really. When do you ever get to hear musicians interviewed so candidly, and seem to have so much fun at the same time? It’s refreshing!

Yeah so I just realized that everybody whose done a podcast with you (including Cory Branen!) has seen baby/nurse/crazy-halloween-costume pictures of me.

Remember when you had a “music blog” and you “blogged” in that “blog” about “music”? Remember when you “wrote things”?

    That was cool.

haha whats the deal with the arkansas bashing? batesville is a pretty place to play and the past josies shows were awesome. anyways thanks for this ladies, good job.

Hey Cody! Batesville IS pretty, but the drive there is abysmal. It’s easy to get caught up in the horrors of driving through backwoods Arkansas.

Glad you liked this. Hopefully more good stuff coming your way.
